Name: Remy (occasionally Urami, NG, Nai)
Species: Banette
Gender: Female
Faction: The Weird Kin
Ability: Insomnia
Gift:
marionettes: Remy can temporarily animate objects, moving them around to her will; mostly she does it on slaughtered prey to freak everyone out. The length of time she can keep it up is directly proportionate to the size and amount of objects she’s trying to control. It has no effect on anything sentient, and anything bigger or heavier than Remy herself is generally very difficult/impossible for her to manipulate.
Hold Item: none
Attacks: Night Shade – Screech Curse – Spite Shadow Sneak – Will-o-Wisp Faint Attack – Shadow Ball Sucker Punch – Snatch
Talents:
-She can dance! She’s also not a half-bad actress, but her voice leaves a little to be desired. -She can see remarkably well in the dark, despite (or perhaps because of) her…condition. -Thanks to her gift, which makes up for her near-useless hands, she’s pretty good with a needle and thread…which is good, considering how often she falls apart.
Personality:
If one was to try and describe Remy in a single word, ‘theatrical’ would probably be the most fitting. Theatrical, and perhaps mad, but then the latter is somewhat of a given considering the company she keeps. Remy’s never happier than when she’s putting on a macabre show for some hapless human who stumbles upon her – though she won’t say no to a Pokémon-only audience, either. Mostly, she’s just happy to show off her ‘talents’ (aka reanimating rotting corpses) to anyone she can get to sit still for long enough, but when she actually puts her mind to it, Remy’s not a half-bad performer herself. Except when she sings.
Almost surprisingly, Remy is not a sadist (although, yes, she does take a great deal of pleasure in the pain of others, but she claims it’s because she ‘used to know a lot of Germans’, whatever that’s supposed to mean.) In fact, she’s closer to the other side of the spectrum – masochism, deriving enjoyment from inflicting pain upon herself. Actually, considering her species gets its cursing abilities from sticking needles voodoo-style into themselves, maybe it’s not so strange that she doesn’t really mind getting beaten up. It’s why she works so well with Makako – she goes along with the girl’s plans without fear of being harmed simply because harm, to her, isn’t necessarily a bad thing – especially when the worst that can really happen is having to limp home and stitch herself up from scratch. Again.
Where new people are involved, Remy is surprisingly friendly. This may seem odd, until one remembers that the girl is, indeed, very theatrical. She considers most encounters as choreographed dances, scenes in a play, and she’ll perform as needed to elicit the desired outcomes. When amongst friends, she loses the cloak of theatricality that is otherwise constantly over her, becoming far more blunt and otherwise ‘normal’. She doesn’t have much of a temper, even when relaxed – she usually has no time for being angry at people, although if you really piss her off, she can hold a grudge for an extraordinarily long time.
Description:
Buttons. That’s probably the most important thing to be said about Remy’s physical appearance. Buttons, and patches. Other than these two key words, Remy’s appearance is exactly what could be expected from a Banette. Humanoid in appearance, she has a short, rotund torso with long arms that end in three-fingered hands, stubby legs that aren’t much good for movement (not that it’s ever stopped her), and a short, saffron tail that she can’t really move. On top of her oval head are three short spikes, and behind those, a ribbon-like protrusion which is shorter than on most Banette dangles down behind her. Alongside this are two longer, crimson ribbons that have clearly been sewn there, albeit clumsily, at some point, for reasons unknown (although she cites wanting pretty ribbons that would spiral around her when she danced.) Speaking of which…
Patches. Lots of them. Most Banette are made completely of a dark cloth; Remy is a patchwork of fabrics, mostly faded, all different textures and colours, sewn together with thick yellow string. Remy’s not an old doll, but years of being messed with by humans have left her with thin skin that almost constantly needs fixing with whatever she can get her clumsy hands on. The needle she uses, a large, slightly blunt affair, sticks out of the back of her head, the yellow string tied intricately around its eye in a knot it seems only Remy is able to undo. Interestingly, the right side of her face (left to the viewer) is still its original colour, the right side a faded grey, with a remarkably neat seam up the middle; this was the first alteration she ever made to herself, although why the quality has since gone down is a mystery even to her.
Something else interesting about Remy’s face, aside from the above, is her mouth. The same saffron as the threads that hold her together, the way her teeth interlock resembles a zipper, and indeed functions as such. Despite her being unable to open it (too hard, and besides, there’s the old superstition about her soul being released if she does so), Remy still manages to be a very outspoken individual, somehow projecting her voice from within. …Oh, yes, and there’s the small matter of the buttons. That is, the shiny black buttons sewn where her eyes should be. Like the zipper-mouth, these apparently function perfectly well as eyes. They just look kinda creepy.
History:
Remy never really knew her parents. As a young girl – first a Shuppet, then later evolving into her current form - she was kept by human scientists in a far-off region and generally messed with. Unfortunately for both them and her, their experiments didn’t have the desired effect of making her a super powerful Pokémon; they gave her thin skin and a serious dislike of humans. During this part of her life, she had a few close friends, the most important being Akui, a mutated Dusclops with whom she formed a tight bond.
Eventually, Remy escaped captivity – at the price of her friend’s freedom, letting the Dusclops be recaptured while she fled. This weighed on the girl’s mind for a time, and she roamed somewhat aimlessly around Kanto for a time….until she was found by a strange Froslass, who introduced her to Makako. The two hit it off right away, although as time passed Remy grew closer to Mika the Froslass, who with her no-nonsense attitude was just too much fun to play with. Still, she and Makako were close friends, happily wreaking havoc over a southern nation. Remy even had her own abandoned contest hall to play in, frightening her way into local lore. Others joined their group, but they remained tight-knit, a happy family unit. Life was good.
That was when the human girl arrived. And very quickly left. It badly upset the balance of the group; first Makako’s servant, of a sort, left them, throwing Makako into a state of despair, then Mika announced she had had enough and disappeared without a trace. Swearing that she was going to forget the ‘traitors’, Makako announced she was moving to Sootopolis to visit a known troublemaker…and really, Remy had nothing better to do but to follow.
